A Mom’s Feedback on “Teach Me To Talk” the DVD
Today I received this email and wanted to share it. Here’s the reason I do this job…
“Hi! It’s Michelle and you sent me your package of DVDs, and I just have to take a moment to kiss your feet! They are fantabulous!!!! I stayed up till one am watching the first DVD Teach Me to Talk, and by 6 am my little four year old was up and ready to play. I pulled out her new Christmas toy “Animal Hospital” (based on your recomendations in a podcast) and got to work right away. KATY SAID THREE NEW WORDS IN JUST HALF AN HOUR!!!! You gotta remember- Katy is non verbal, so this was HUGE!!!! She said “ball,” “yeah” and “Okay” in a perfectly intelligible way!!!!! - Michelle H., Texas

THANK YOU MICHELLE!!! Keep up the good work with Katy and let us know how she continues to progress!

Hi Laura ~
This is my most favorite population to work with and I think I have as much fun as the kiddos! I have most of the motivating activities that you displayed, but wondered if you could share the name/makers/or place of purchase of any of the following items…?
I just finished watching your DVD, “Teach Me To Talk” and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have a very similar style as you and was additionally inspired by watching you in action.
- Small wind-up Thomas the Tank Engine track with the bridge/tunnel where Thomas gets “stuck”
- pop ball (push down and it deflates, then pops back in to shape)
- the device where you plugged in a cartridge and it verbalized the name/sound of the item put in the middle (animals and modes of transport were utilized)
- mini microwave (love that!)
- blocks that open with mini animals hidden inside
- figure 8 racecar track (way fun for the boys I have on my caseload!)
Headed out to purchase some Hefty baggies - Ziploc doesn’t make that ‘in between’ size you use. Thank you!
LOVE the video and will most definitely share it with my clients’ parents.
Thank you for sharing your talent with us!

Nikki - Thanks so much! I’m so glad you liked the DVD!
To answer your questions about the toys - you can find most of the particulars for almost everything from the DVDs in the articles in the Toys section here on the site, but I’ll try to list them here as well.
The small Thomas is Carry Along Thomas by Tomy and is several years old, so it’s not in stores anymore. I have the newer version of this toy, but don’t like it nearly as much. You might try ebay for this one.
The pop ball is a Phlat ball and can be found by the Nerf toys at Target, WalMart, or Toys R Us. It’s a keeper - especially for sensory seekers since they can get their deep pressure even staying with you to play rather than running around to crash into something!
The electronic device is Little Linguist by Neurosmith, and is also not made anymore. I’ve bought my last couple off ebay. It’s pricey, but has been worth it to me!
I’ve bought different versions of very similar mini-microwaves at WalMart, Target and Toys Are Us. You should be able to find this one.
The blocks are very old Tupperware blocks. I misplaced my original set (probably left them in a client’s home), so my friend Kate who hosts the podcast with me found a set in a second hand toy store. She is quite the shopper and finds lots of old toys this way. I don’t have the time (or patience) for that kind of shopping, but if you do it regularly enough, I think you can find lots of toys they don’t make any more but should!
The Figure 8 racetrack is a Lightning McQueen toy and is probably still available at my 3 go-to stores - Target, WalMart and Toys R Us. I have given several of those as presents and bought them at all 3 places.
AND the Ziplock bags are the Hefty 2 gallon size, and I buy them in bulk from Kroger, the only place I’ve found that carries that size regularly. I don’t know if you have Kroger in the part of the country you’re in, so maybe try a large grocery store chain. I LOVE those bags and should own stock in that company based on not only how many cases I’ve bought, but how many therapists and moms have told me they use them now too!
Thanks again for your comment. I love hearing from SLPs who also do what I do!! Laura
