Therapy Tip of the Week 8.17.12
Here’s this week’s Therapy Tip of the week from teachmetotalk.com:
Water and Sand Play
Toddlers LOVE playing in the water or sand. The video contains ideas for using these materials to teach language to toddlers with developmental delays.
The end of summer clearance sales are a great time to pick up water wheels and other tools to make playing in the water or with sand more fun.
Add a few other toys like fish, ducks, turtles, and other animals that live in the water, but don’t limit your play with only those kinds of toys. Farm and zoo animals like to swim too. Even favorite characters like Dora, Woody, and Elmo can be fun props for water play.
Sand provides even more options. Add dinosaurs or construction toys. Don’t forget to target verbs like dig, pour, push, and pull as you’re playing together.
Above all, have fun! No toy can substitute for an engaged and playful adult!
Enjoy your last few weeks of summer

I forgot to mention that you can buy sand very cheaply at a home improvement store. I got my last HUGE bag at Lowe’s for $3. What a deal! Laura

Hi Laura,
Thanks for these great tips. It is really useful since I am an SLT in Uganda and it is great to have a few “outside the box” ideas! What you can suggest for us here with limited equipment and funds? We do have a sand pit and basins for waterplay, and cups and jugs. But not much of the gross motor equipment I have seen on your previous video. Some of the parents of our clients would also feel a little uncomfortable about seeing their children playing in the sand when their expectations for speech therapy are flashcards and microphones! Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Genevieve
