    Hi Laura,

After ‘stumbling’ upon your website late last night (a blessing!), I have just ordered your 3 DVD Set (Teach Me To Talk + Teach Me To Listen and Obey 1 & 2) for my 21 month non-verbal & non pre-verbal (not pointing or waving) son who also has SID (tactile + oral texture aversion + vestibular processing disorder), and has ‘extreme’ separation anxiety issues. My little guy has recently had many evaluations, including one last week with his Pediatrician (along with recent evaluations with his new OT & SLP) as PDD-NOS.

Although I have adopted the DIRS/Floortime model with my DS in the last two months, I am feeling somewhat anxious as progress seems slow (two steps forward, one step back). Please note, my little Angel has endured three kidney surgeries at 7, 8, 9 1/2 months respectively. I feel ‘crushed’ with this recent diagnosis, as I thought we were finally getting some reprieve with all the medical treatment and ongoing monitoring. Also, my DS is on a waiting list for behavioural intervention (my understanding is that it could be for an extended period of time).

I have perused your site and am not sure whether your toy recommendation is listed here somewhere? If not, is there any chance you could email this list so I can time the purchase of the recommended toys with the delivery of my dvd’s?

Finally, any suggestions on how I can progress with the pre-verbal gesturing, especially pointing and waving?

    Thank you in advance,

    Concerned, but LOVING mum.

Klaudia – Thanks so much for your comment. So sorry about all of the things going on with your little boy, BUT you sound like great mom, and I applaud your enthusiasm and commitment to helping him.

The DVDs should be helpful for you since they are more structure and specific than Floortime, but still more of a relationship focused approach than ABA/Behavioral therapy. My therapy manual Teach Me To Play WITH You outlines specific social games to play with children who are just learning to make a social connection and interact with others.

Here’s the link to the toys article –

I am working on a new therapy manual to teach professionals how to target preverbal gestures, so check back around the holidays for that one.

Glad you’re liking the website. I always recommend that moms start waaaaay back at the beginning for any category and then read forward. The “how to” articles are mostly from 2008 and 2009. Happy reading 🙂 Laura

Thank you for your prompt and caring response. I have just ordered your therapy manual, and as you have noted, I am indeed committed to enhancing/maximising my DS’s development. Also, I am sure to be an ardent follower of your website.

    Loving Aussie mum!
