Before any child begins to talk, he’s mastering a set of 11 distinct skills that develop before we begin to hear words. Let me explain how important these skills are… When any one of these skills is disrupted, there’s possibly a language delay. When several are missing, a stall in language development is inevitable. When a child struggles to attain many of these skills, a long-term communication disorder is likely. In this one-hour audio-video podcast, we’ll review the 11 skills so that you can understand the key role each skill plays in language development. By the end of the show, ASHA CEU Course #0385 When Is A Child Developmentally Ready to Talk? Teaching Parents of Toddlers the Importance of Prelinguistic Skills, you’ll have a good idea for what you should work on to help any toddler begin to communicate.

- Why do we address prelinguistic skills rather than “talking” in speech therapy with toddlers?
Review of 11 Prelinguistic Skills (4:10 – 5:20)
- Reacts to events in the environment (5:20 – 8:40)
- Responds to people (8:40 – 14:56)
- Begins turn taking (14:46 – 20:20)
- Develops a longer attention span (20:20 – 25:00)
- Shifts and shares joint attention (25:00 – 30:24)
- Plays with a variety of toys appropriately (30:24- 35:51)
- Understands early words and follows simple directions (35:51 – 43:20)
- Vocalizes purposefully (43:20 – 47: 40)
- Imitates actions, gestures, sounds, and words (47:40 – 53:40)
- Uses early gestures (53:40 – 57:15)
- Initiates interaction with others (57:15 – 60)

Satisfactory Course Completion Requirements
Participants must have watched the video and paid the $7 processing fee to obtain a certificate of completion and/or to have your participation submitted to the ASHA CE Registry. Once the $7 fee is paid, you will be redirected to complete additional information online required to award a Certificate of Completion which includes completion of the Verification Statement that you watched the video, Self Assessment of Learning Outcomes, a Program Evaluation, Request for Certificate, and an ASHA CEU participant form or your ASHA number for filing ASHA CEUs (if applicable). Once all required sections are completed and submitted, you will receive access to generate your certificate which will be emailed to you upon final review of your submission. No credit will be awarded without completion of this entire process. ASHA CEU information is submitted monthly and will appear on your ASHA CEU Registry shortly thereafter. Partial credit is not available.
For Other Professionals: Upon completion and return of the forms and receipt of your $7 registration fee, a Certificate of Completion will be provided so that you may file for continuing education with your own organization or licensing agency.
For Non-Professionals and Parents: All course content is offered at an Introductory, Professional Level and may not be suitable for all parents or non-professionals. If you'd like a Certificate of Completion, you may also register for credit.
