Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP, in this ASHA CEU Course #386 Prelinguistic Skill #1 Teach a Child to Respond and Interact, as she explains the 11 prelinguistic skills all toddlers master before words emerge. This is show #2 in this series. Watch #385 for background and a brief explanation of the 11 skills. In this show, we’re discussing more background and then explaining in detail Skill #1 RESPONDS AND INTERACTS WITH THINGS IN THE ENVIRONMENT. Remember that this skill refers to a child’s ability to react to sensory information – or things he can see, hear, touch, hold, and manipulate. The kinds of skills we want to facilitate at this phase are alerting, looking, calming, attending, reaching, grasping, holding, mouthing, waving objects, banging, and then…REPEAT!
Here’s where we should begin to work with toddlers with severe developmental disabilities and not on teaching them to talk. Why? Because a child who can’t do these kinds of things consistently, chiefly alert, react, and interact with things in his or her environment, is not developmentally ready to learn to understand and use words.

Satisfactory Course Completion Requirements
Participants must have watched the video and paid the $7 processing fee to obtain a certificate of completion and/or to have your participation submitted to the ASHA CE Registry. Once the $7 fee is paid, you will be redirected to complete additional information online required to award a Certificate of Completion which includes completion of the Verification Statement that you watched the video, Self Assessment of Learning Outcomes, a Program Evaluation, Request for Certificate, and an ASHA CEU participant form or your ASHA number for filing ASHA CEUs (if applicable). Once all required sections are completed and submitted, you will receive access to generate your certificate which will be emailed to you upon final review of your submission. No credit will be awarded without completion of this entire process. ASHA CEU information is submitted monthly and will appear on your ASHA CEU Registry shortly thereafter. Partial credit is not available.
For Other Professionals: Upon completion and return of the forms and receipt of your $7 registration fee, a Certificate of Completion will be provided so that you may file for continuing education with your own organization or licensing agency.
For Non-Professionals and Parents: All course content is offered at an Introductory, Professional Level and may not be suitable for all parents or non-professionals. If you'd like a Certificate of Completion, you may also register for credit.
