ASHA CEU Course #412 Facilitating Peer Interaction…The Autism Podcast Series

Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com for this one-hour audio/video podcast, ASHA CEU Course #412 Facilitating Peer Interaction…The Autism Podcast Series. One of the core diagnostic features of autism is persistent deficits in social interaction and social communication across multiple settings and contexts. Many young children with characteristics of ASD seem to ignore or avoid interaction with people who are not in their immediate families, including children their own age. Many times parents think this problem is due to lack of exposure. While that may be true in some cases with kids with other language delays/disorders, when a child has characteristics of autism, that’s very likely NOT the problem. Learn how to facilitate peer interaction using these strategies.

Overview

Introduction

Differences in Peer Interaction in Toddlers with Autism (0 – 14:00)

Stage 1 – Target engagement with adults first using social games (14:00 – 30:00)

Stage 2 – Introduce loosely structured gross motor play (30:00 – 49:30)

Stage 3 – Begin group sensory play (49:30 – 56:10)

Stage 4 – Move on to small group or “circle time” activities (56:10 – 1 hour, 1 minute, 37 seconds)

Stage 5 – Provide toys or props that facilitate early peer play (1:01:37 – 1:05)

Determining Starting Points for a Child’s Strong Individual Preferences (1:05:00 – 1:10:00)
